Happy New School Year! Here we are in October of a new school year! It is the month that we typically start to feel like we have settled in for the year. You may be feeling a little less adventurous with your planning and a bit more realistic with your goals. This is the time of year when things are not feeling as new and fresh as they were just a month ago.
What I have learned is that a lot of teacher friends are feeling the same way about their profession. It seems like there are memes and posts all over Facebook and Instagram with the same messages – teachers are struggling! As a seasoned teacher starting her 23rd year of teaching, I can say that this job has change so much since I started. I have written about it before, but find that in the last few years, everything about the profession has gotten more involved and stressful.
The scary part is that I am seeing more and more colleagues breaking down. Whether it be physically or emotionally, so many seem so much more stressed than ever. There seems to be a general dissatisfaction in the job that did not seem to be there when I first started teaching. Being that we have the job of taking care of others all day, it is time that there is a revolution to take care of ourselves! You know that old saying from when you last traveled on an airplane, “you need to put your own oxygen mask on before assisting others”. Well, this my friends is the big focus for the continuation of my mindful mission. I want to help those in the teaching profession to see the importance of taking care of ourselves so that we can be the BEST possible roll model, teacher, care taker and person that we can be for our students.
Over the next few months, I am going to focus on how we can use mindfulness to help ourselves. I would like to start a movement where administrators can see how important it is to be sure that the teachers in each building are taken care of. Imagine a school where teachers felt valued, appreciated, and calm. Imagine how that could benefit every student those teachers come in contact with! Imagine the climate that could be created if the focus is on the well being of every individual!
Over the course of the next few months, I plan to share resources and information to help you to start taking care of …you! My goal is create a movement of teachers who have made mindfulness part of their every day lives and who see the value in sharing it with their students and colleagues. I hope that you will stop back often and maybe even share what you learn with your friends.
I am also in the process of sending out a monthly newsletter with more resources. If you are interested in joining the mailing list, please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Have a mindful day!
